Episode 12 - My Catalyst
February 10, 2004

J.D. and Turk are excited about the upcoming visit by visiting professor Dr. Kevin Casey (Michael J. Fox). Kevin is a medical attending and an accomplished surgeon, which makes him “superdoc” in J.D.’s eyes. Another quality that makes Dr. Casey unique is that he suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

J.D. feels himself starting to really like Dr. Casey, in a mentor/mentee kind of way. It turns out that Dr. Cox and Dr. Casey were residents together, so that makes J.D. feel even closer to Casey. But, tensions between the two old friends flare when Casey beats Dr. Cox in diagnosing Mr. Silberman’s condition as Gaucher’s disease.

Turk is also in awe of Dr. Casey when he gets to assist him with a lap-coli surgery.

Wanting to prove that he knows more than Dr. Casey, Cox has the residents fire off diagnostic questions to him and Casey. J.D. asks Cox a question about metabolic diseases, an area that Cox is weak in. Just as before, Casey has the answer before Cox even has a chance to think about it.

When J.D. and Casey are downing beers at the bar later, J.D. thinks he has found a new mentor, but Casey shoots that theory down almost immediately. The next day, J.D., Cox and Turk are all moodier than normal. Kevin’s presence at the hospital has made them all face their shortcomings as doctors and men.

But Casey’s own shortcomings are revealed when J.D. finds him in the bathroom, still washing his hand two hours after he finished surgery. J.D. learns that everyone has their burdens to bear.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kelso pays the Janitor and his new sidekick Randall $23 to get rid of the regular garbage instead of sneaking it in with the medical waste garbage. The Janitor takes the money but doesn’t reveal what he did with the trash. It’s later revealed that they’ve been dumping the trash bags onto the first story entrance roof.
