Season 4, Episode 6 - My Cake
October 12, 2004
J.D. gets a surprise visit from his brother Dan (Tom Cavanagh), who tells him that their father has died. Surprisingly, J.D. takes the loss better than his brother. When they return from the funeral, Dan takes a bath, but doesn't come out for a few days. He just lays in the tub, drinking one beer after another. J.D. tries to reach out to him, but Dan is too shaken by the loss. Dr. Cox actually tries to do something nice, so he takes over his patient load. He even tries to give J.D. a hug, but he ends up punching him in the face instead. Meanwhile, Dan is still holed up in the bathtub.
Later, Cox and Dan team up and ambush J.D. They put on football jerseys, get some beer and pretend to watch a football game. The real purpose is to get J.D. to open up about losing his father. But then, something surprising happens, Cox tells him that he's proud of him. J.D. and Dan, along with Dr. Cox, end up reminiscing about the good times with their dad.
Turk is dealing with a different type of loss. He's losing weight, very tired and has to go to the bathroom all the time. Carla can't get him to go to the doctor, so she uses Molly to get to him. She pretends that she has a patient with Turk's symptoms. Turk immediately speculates that the "patient" may have diabetes. He then realizes that she was referring to him. Turns out he has type II diabetes. He doesn't tell Carla that he has it. But he doesn't know that she already knows. She broke into Dr. Landow's office and looked at Turk's file. When Turk and Molly get a chance to talk, she tells him that he's afraid to be vulnerable with Carla because she sees him as her Superman, so he doesn't want to disappoint her.
Meanwhile, the Janitor plays a joke on Dr. Kelso by doing small things to make him think he's suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
